About Mike

Mike Schmid is the founder, president, and CEO of SOS Well Services, LLC. He has over 40 years of experience in oilfield services, including managing roustabout crews; constructing well field roads and drill pads; and managing trucks, equipment, and hundreds of employees.

Mike was raised in the small town of Daniel, WY. He graduated from Pinedale High School in 1976 and immediately found work and an eventual career in the oil & natural gas fields of southwest Wyoming. Mike briefly thought of attending college, but with the start of his family, that never came to pass. Mike says he got an education; it just wasn't inside four walls. Eventually, Mike moved to La Barge, WY, to be closer to his work. It was there in the La Barge and Big Piney area where he met his wife, Pam. They were married in 1980 and raised 3 daughters who are now all married and have given Mike & Pam the precious gift of 10 grandchildren.

Mike founded Schmid Oilfield Services, Inc. in 1984. This successful company was sold to First Energy Services in June 2000. During his time with First Energy Services, Mike was an integral part of the team that acquired 5 more oilfield related companies with operations throughout the Rocky Mountain region and Alaska. While working for First Energy Services, Mike founded SOS Well Services as a workover rig company. In 2006, Mike started to expand SOS Well Services to create the multi-million-dollar operation that exists today.

During the time building his first oilfield company Mike also founded Schmid Development Co. as a company that buys, sells, and leases commercial properties. This company still operates today and holds properties in Wyoming, Nebraska, and Michigan.

In late 2000, Mike purchased the Watts Ranch near Devils Tower, Wyoming. Mike continued to purchase and lease land there and eventually founded Solitude Ranch & Outfitters. Today, the ranch consists of 8500 acres of prime Black Hills land. The ranch has a reputation for quality Whitetail deer, Mule deer, and Turkey hunting, as well as raising Angus cattle.

All three of Mike's companies, where he has put in place a team that runs the day-to-day operations, are still operating successfully today. This affords Mike the time to give back to his communities and state.

Mike is also a life-long outdoorsman and conservationist. He was the executive producer and co-host of the Intrepid Outdoors television series, which aired on NBC Sports, The Sportsman Channel, and Canada's WildTV from 2008 through 2014.

One of Mike's goals with the television series was to show how Wyoming's vast natural resources could be developed without any long-term damage to her environment or wildlife. Mike's many segments proved that the two can and do co-exist. The program also sought to show the importance of understanding the current debate over the use of our public lands.

Mike has been a member of the BOD of the Wyoming State 4-H Foundation for the past 12 years. He also serves as a director for the Wyoming Trapping Association, representing Area 5 in SW Wyoming. He was a past member of the La Barge City Council, The Wyoming Wildlife Foundation, The Old West Turkey Shoot, and The Wyoming Game & Fish Commission. While serving on the G&F Commission, Mike was instrumental in forming and serving as the President of the newly formed WYldlife Fund. Through his company, Mike now spends time volunteering his labor and company equipment to the many organizations that work to benefit and manage our wildlife and wild places.
